As the school year comes to an end, there is a hint of sadness in our happy school. St Colmcille’s BNS is saying farewell to its much loved and much admired principal. Mr Jim Bennett has been a part of our school since his first day here in 1970 and has been central to making our school what it is today. Over the past number of weeks, many people have been saying goodbye to Mr Bennett, thanking him for his fantastic contribution to our school and wishing him well in the future. Here is a sample of some of the events we have shared recently…
On Monday, 15 June 2015, the Board of Management of St Colmcille’s BNS made a presentation to Mr Bennett and thanked him for his many years of service to the school. Mr Bennett replied suitably.
On Tuesday, 23 June 2015 there was a gathering of the whole school community to recognise and celebrate the contribution Mr Bennett has made to St Colmcille’s BNS over the past 45 years. Among the attendees were the teaching and ancillary staff, the recently retired Chairperson of the BOM, Mr Tom Shields and his wife Áine. Our Deputy Principal, Mr McGuinness spoke about Mr Bennett’s years of service to our school with many anecdotes relating to Mr Bennett’s early teaching career. There was a presentation made to Mr Bennett on behalf of the school community and everyone wished him well for the future.
On Wednesday, 24 June 2015 there was an assembly of the whole school. The boys shared their memories of Mr Bennett. The boys in 4th and 5th Classes wrote poems and Mr Bennett was presented with a ‘Fingerprint Tree’ which the boys had been working on for the past few weeks. The children printed their fingerprints on the tree to represent all of the boys of Swords which Mr Bennett had taught over the past 45 years. The boys prayed for Mr Bennett and his family and wished him well for the future. We finished with a song entitled ‘We’re gonna miss you when you’re gone’ – a very appropriate choice, with lyrics written especially for the occasion.
